The second book I finished this year, I tore through it in about a week. David R. Slayton's debut novel has a super-engaging gay male protagonist, Adam, with very real-world problems rooted in his gayness (as well as a few supernatural problems to keep things spicy) that make him affecting and believable. There's a budding romance with handsome cop, Vic, and plenty of mysterious goings-on involving the spirit plane, elves, and grim reapers. What more do you need? The secondary characters are great, well-drawn and complex. Adam's family are a bit of a nightmare, while Vic's are a joy. The elven princess, Silver, is every gay man's dream. Can I be her for Halloween? Can't wait to spend more time with all of them.

I drew up a list of the books I read last year, but I'm sure I missed a bunch, so I'm trying to be more deliberate and mindful about my reading in 2023.

The first book I've finished this year (started between Xmas and New Year) was Whispers Underground by Ben Aaronovitch, (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5) the third book in his Rivers of London Series. It's an enjoyable world to visit with engaging characters. An urban fantasy/police procedural crossover, it ticks some boxes for me (imaginative magic, mysterious goings on just below the surface) while leaving some unticked (I like procedurals on TV more than I do on the page). The series fits in that "I'm not sure what to read next, so I'll go for something reliable" slot, though, if procedurals are your thing, this might be a 5/5 for you.
